All Star Home Run Derby Results.
The senior circuit of the Silver League stated off the All Star day in the
Home Run Derby contest. With proven veterans Jim Templeton and Keith
Williams and new comer Randy Miller. The first round of 10 hits saw Jim
hit the only one out. In the second round of 10, Jim hit another 3. Much
to the chagrin of the crowd, the pitcher's were not throwing very many
meatballs as both Keith and Randy came up empty. The rules committee has
determined that based on the results, 70+ can hit from the pitchers mound
next year. Jim is the champion of the Senior Circuit and advances to the
overall round.
The junior circuit pitted league rookie Russ Hawley, 3rd year player Dennis
Loughery and Mike Cairns last years returning champion. Dennis lead off
the 1st round of 10 with a goose egg. This was his first time in a Home
Run derby contest. Russ quickly picked up the pace by hitting 4 of his
10. Mike followed with 2 of out 10. In the second round Dennis was able
to get on the board with 1. Nice job Dennis! In his second round Russ was
able to build what would be an insurmountable lead by adding another 5 for
a total of 9. Mike ended the junior circuit by adding 3 more for a total
of 5. Russ is the champion of the Junior Circuit and advanced to finals.
In the Overall round, Jim set the mark early with 1 of his first 5. Russ
followed his hot hitting by hitting 3 of 5. In the last 5 hits, Jim added
another 1 but that was not enough. Russ didn't add any in his last round,
but he didn't need too, he was crowed the overall champion with 3.
Look out Red division, Russ has all the potential of a first class rookie
and a welcome addition to the Silver League.
Congratulations to Russ and Jim and all of the other contestants and to Jim
Holderbaum and Ron Chafe.
For those that stuck around, there was a special Home Run derby contest:
Father vs. Son,
Righty vs. Lefty,
Ultra 2 vs. stock bat,
Youth vs...well lets call it experience.
The contest was dedicated to the memory of Tony Cairns, father and
grandfather, who just last year could be seen at the fields to cheer for
his sons and grandson.
Mike Cairns hit against his son Michael. Michael lead off the first round
showing that the student had learned his lesson well. He hit 5 out of 10
in his first round and remember he was not using a senior bat! Mike
followed with 4 out of 10. Michael then unloaded in the second round
finishing with 8 out of 10 and a streak of 7 in a row. Dave Parravani
reported that one of the balls ended next to the infield on the Pony field.
Some of these shots were flying over the lights on the Pony field. Mike
was able to hit 5 in final round of 10, but it was not enough. Youth was
served on this day, but it is a day that each will remember for a long
time. Responding to a "curtain" call, Michael turned so that he could
hit towards to the hill in left. After hitting several half way up the
hill, he blasted one that landed on the uppermost tier about 5 feet from
the street, all without the aid of a senior bat.
I hope everyone had a good time, that is what it is all about!
Thanks,
Mike Cairns
